Play a Story is for students of all ages, from 4 to 104!

You can experience Play a Story it in two different ways: interacting with the Story book and interacting with the Movie

For younger students - Interact with the Story Book

Travelling through a storybook world, children learn to listen, feel and literally ‘play the story’ across the whole piano, while it is being read. Play a Story takes between 12-18 months to complete.

Here at Play a Story, we believe the "home-coach" plays an integral part throughout a child's musical journey.  In this 10 minute Parent Introductory Video we offer a glimpse into the wonder of this extraordinary program. Enjoy!

The musical dress-up corner

What would the music sound like if it was the wind in the forest, or a shell tossed around the ocean? In the world of Play a Story, every imaginative thought, every emotion is an opportunity for students to express themselves in the language of music – a language that can be deeply profound.

The vocabulary of their new language comes in the form of simple piano motifs - short musical phrases or ideas. The motif incorporates melody, harmony and rhythm. How the motif is played (using dynamics and octave placement) describes what is happening in the story. Students are learning key theoretical concepts, forming a solid playing foundation for their journey forward.

For older Students - Interact with the Movie.

This part of the program meets the needs of students with a broad spectrum of playing experience, from beginner to advanced.

Students play their own piano improvisation along to short movies viewed on a device at the piano, expressing the mood, colour and nuance - it's live and spontaneous! The movie scenes come alive through musical interpretation, revealing the true musician inside.

Student Home Materials

There are three "Journeys" that make up the program: Song of the Zephyr-Wind, Ocean Lullaby and Travel Notes. Student Home Materials support students at home, a little like taking a teacher home each week. They include beautiful print, audio and video components. More than just accessories, these materials provide the environment to inspire your musical journey.

Carefully structured and engaging lessons with a fully trained Innermusician teacher brings the learning experience to life. We have a growing number of teachers around the world who teach both private or group lessons, bringing a unique energy to the learning experience.

Alternatively, find an on-line coach. This is a great way to learn in your own home. Alongside the Student Home Materials, students are supported individually throughout every lesson with an on-line coach.

Not ready to commit to lessons or coaching? You can purchase the Student Home Materials and teach yourself in your own space and time. Every scene includes the stories and movies to play along with as well as home coaching videos to walk you through your journey
